The “Drop In” focus sessions have been a great success for engagement at the Wells Maltings.
The Maltings has been open to the public to enable people to find out more about the development. The Maltings team have been doing a great job answering questions from clubs and groups that will use the finished building, as well as from interested individuals. Site tours were being done all afternoon on selected days throughout Sept, Oct and Dec.
Some people even brought in interesting items from their archives, such as recordings from local people interviewed in Wells in the post war period. These finds may be able to be incorporated into displays in the finished building but everything helps to build up a picture of what is going to be an amazing local development. Many useful artefacts will be added to the new Heritage Centre.
The latest Drop In, saw the new theatre auditorium modelled to actual dimensions and layout on the ground floor. A mock up of the seating was errected to enable people to actually sit down and check things like leg room. On the second floor, the planned “Circulation space” was marked out to show how the Bar, coffee shop, facilities etc would all sit comfortable together in the finished building. The consideration of all aspects of the design is still ongoing, for example it may be that the planned lift is too big and a smaller one would free up more space.
The Maltings is going to be an inviting building, welcoming people in to watch films or go to the theatre. It was great to see it with it’s doors open, offering a chance to brainstorm activities and ideas from the local community
