Hew Purchas Revisited – Art Exhibition

April 8th – 12th 11am – 7pm Daily

In September 2016 the Wells Malting’s Trust was incredibly proud to host an exhibition to celebrate the art work of local artist Hew Purchas.  This well visited and highly popular exhibition will be repeated in April 2017 with more of Hew’s work being displayed including several large, striking oil paintings.

Hew Purchas was born in North London in 1933.  After full-time education at the Mill Hill School he attended Ealing and Chelsea Colleges of Art before going on to run the Art Department of Queen Elizabeths Boys School, Barnet.  Having first discovered North Norfolk in 1960, he made frequent visits to paint the beautiful landscapes and open skies before he was able to move to Wells-next-the-Sea, after early retirement in 1987.  He liked to paint from life, landscapes or still life, often using the pantile roofs and flint and brick walls around him as a starting point.  He exhibited several times at the Royal Academy with the New English Art Club and the Royal Society of British Artists and had several one man mixed exhibitions.

A note from the Artist:

“I revel in sitting before my subject and interpreting it into oil Paint.  The light, changes of weather and the seasons are the stimulus to me as a landscape painter.  When the weather is cold, I spend many happy days in my studio.  The objects which I have collected around me stimulate new pictures,  I am particularly fond of stuffed animals and birds which can make very exciting compositions put in relation to parts of the studio.”
