Art Exhibitions

An exciting new exhibition by Debbie Lyddon and Caroline Fisher will open in the Handa Gallery at Wells Maltings on Wednesday 13th March and will continue until Saturday 6th April. Following a Private View on the first evening, Moments of Being will be open to the public from 11am to 4pm daily; entry free.

The exhibits by Debbie Lyddon will include collages, cloths and cloth sculpture, all relating to Wells Beach and the surrounding area, one of which – View from the Shipwrights – formed part of the popular Wells Heritage Art Trail last summer. Prices for Debbie Lyddon’s pieces will range from £35 to £3,000.

Debbie Lyddon has been coming to Wells-next-the-Sea on the North Norfolk coast for 25 years where the creeks, beaches and skies have inspired her work, leading to the publication of a book called Moments of Being, The Sluice Creek Cloths and other smaller works, from which the exhibition takes its name. Debbie said: “Each work notates the memory of a commonplace event or observation: the sun moving over the marsh and creating shadows, the clink of halyards knocking against masts, the shape of a bend in the creek or the way saltwater marks my clothes.”

Joining Debbie Lyddon is Caroline Fisher who is exhibiting wheel-thrown and hand-built ceramics. A curator and ceramic-maker based near Norwich, she runs Caroline Fisher Projects, a gallery in Upper St Giles Street, Norwich, and is also subject specialist on the Masters’ course in Curation at Norwich University of the Arts. For this exhibition, Caroline will show a series of porcelain bowls and platters that unite functionality with decorative themes. The pieces are decorated with imagined and remembered Japanese landscapes painted free-hand on to the porcelain using cobalt and iron oxides then fired at high temperature using glazes made in her studio. Prices for the bowls and platters will range from £30 to £120.

Moments of Being will take place in the Handa Gallery upstairs at Wells Maltings, Staithe Street, Wells next the Sea, Norfolk, NR23 1AN. Tel 01328 710885; Also on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
