In the turbulent decades of the early 17th century, European composers threw off the restraints of Renaissance polyphony and embraced a thrilling new world of expressive freedom. This programme gathers some of the era’s most inventive voices — Castello’s mercurial sonatas, Kapsberger’s luminous theorbo textures, Schmelzer’s earthy and celestial violin writing, and Piccinini’s mesmerising variations on the ancient folia — into a single, vivid journey through th birth of the Baroque. Dramatic, passionate, and unapologetically fantastical, this is music that still astonishes four centuries on.
