As an award-winning filmmaker himself, Barney Broom shares insights in his series of talks with the fifth presentation, charting the modern resurgence of British cinema sparked by visionary talents like David Puttnam and Alan Parker transitioning from commercials to features. He details how this pipeline unleashed directors like Ridley Scott to conquer international cinema.
Talk 3b: Back to the Future
Concluding in his series of talks with the sixth presentation, director and author Barney Broom tracks the evolution of motion picture technology from silent reels to generative AI. While this brave new world might redefine traditional cameras, he argues that the human artist remains essential to provide the creative soul algorithms cannot mimic.
Barney Broom:
With a lifetime working in film and media Barney Broom is a member of BAFTA and the Director’s Guild of Great Britain. He is an award winning director and novelist. Having an extensive knowledge of Hollywood history and the British Film Industry, Barney presents lectures on both at sea and on land to some acclaim. As a published author Barney has written seven novels including the popular Podric Moon series. Current work includes a World War 2 story entitled In God We Trust. The tale is set in Norfolk and involves an African American aviator and a young woman in the Land Army. Publication is scheduled for Spring ’27.
