Taplin started writing when Roger McGough allowed him to put a couple of his poems to music and persuaded him to start writing. Both his poetry and songs are lyrical as well as narrative, ironic and sometimes delivered with humour. He also musically draws on influences, such as Sandy Denny, Jackson Browne, John Martyn, Van Morrison as well as drawing on the guitar work of Graham Nash, David Crosby and David Lindley to deliver material in Americana West Coast, Folk and blues styles
