LATE FAME (15)

Show Information

PRESENTED BY SCREEN NEXT THE SEA

Ed [Willem Dafoe] has worked in the same Manhattan mailroom for decades. His life takes a turn when he meets Meyers [Edmund Donovan]. Meyers considers Ed’s obscure 1979 poetry collection a neglected masterpiece and wants to introduce Ed to his like minded circle of writing-obsessed twenty-somethings. Ed discovers that being the oldest person in the room is fun if you fall in with the right group, but also that it can be tough to know if the group is right until you are in it. From the director Kent Jones and screenwriter Samy Birch [May/December, Coyote vs Acme] comes a culture-class drama with a smart sense of humour.

Mashable: “Willem Dafoe and Greta Lee mesmerise in a tale of New York City, art and identity.”

Mark Dujsik: “In it’s subdued and observational way, Late Fame and especially Dafoe’s reserved performance in it, shows us a character who gets in over his head without realising it. That’s because he is in denial about how much he wanted and, somewhere inside him, still wants his dreams to become real.”

Culture Vulture: “ Dafoe turns in a performance fully invested in the Saxberger idiom: informed experience begets the patience and zest for life that inspire originality “.

Los Angeles Times: “ There’s a wisdom and depth to the film’s themes of growing old, dashed dreams and the magic of rediscovery, plus a deliciously ironic twist “.

Dir: Kent Jones. Cast: Willem Dafoe, Greta Lee, Edmund Donovan.
