PRESENTED BY SCREEN NEXT THE SEA
Origin is a 2023 American biographical drama film written and directed by Academy Award Nominee Ava DuVernay (Selma). It is based on the life of Isabel Wilkerson, the first African American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for journalism, as she writes the book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. Played by Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, over the course of the film, Wilkerson travels throughout Germany, India, and the United States to research the caste systems in each country’s history, during which she faces personal losses and uncovers the beauty of love and human resilience . In her book Wilkerson seeks to reframe the discussion of race and racism in the US by examining historical hierarchies on a global and historical scale. The key element is power: those who have it, and how they aggressively keep hold of it by creating societal divisions and powerful social stigma.

“A moving drama that’s unafraid to ask big questions, Origin honours its source material with powerful performances in service of a deeply emotional story”. Critics Consensus Rotten Tomatoes
