Director Herzog is a wild, willful obsessive and in his leading man he found a soulmate. Kinski plays Fitzgerald (but known by the indigenous people as Fitzcarraldo), an Irish adventurer in early 20th century Peru who dreams of building an opera house in a remote Amazonian port and bringing Enrico Caruso to sing there.
