Show Information
Presented by North Sea Opera
Dr Susannah Self leads her talented opera troupe in a charming heartfelt and playful opera that she has composed about Artemisia Gentileschi one of the foremost painters of the early1600s.
Set in Venice during the year that Artemisia worked there, her residence coincides with the rise of convents in Venice. At this time convents reinvented themselves so that women embraced an unprecedented freedom. They dressed in their own clothes, commissioned artists and created operas which were accompanied by lavish feasts.
As the opera develops, the nuns devise an opera within an opera based on the historically documented rape trial of Artemisia heard by no less than the Pope! History shows that Artemisia’s response to this situation was to literally roll up her sleeves and become the artist that she was destined to be.
Last year Dr Self’s Sea Requiem in Ely Cathedral was described by Paul Conway in Musical Opinion as “a substantial score of fervent, directly expressive music”.
